Operations
Operations PhotoThis division consists of all the shift personnel who work around the clock. Each shift consists of one District Chief, eleven company officers, eleven engineers, (fire apparatus operators) and twenty-one fire fighters. These numbers represent when shifts are at full strength.  These personnel man eight engine companies, three truck companies and one command vehicle. The City formerly was divided into two districts until recent budget cuts. Now one shift commander responds to all emergencies beyond a single company response.

In 2005, the Fire Department responded to over 18,000 emergency calls for service. Types of calls included structure fires, audible fire alarms, emergency medical calls, hazardous conditions, assist citizens, assist police, honest mistakes and false alarms.

The Operations Division is divided into three platoons with each platoon working 24 hours on and having 48 hours off. This rotation is continuous, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Personnel are, for the most part, assigned to a particular station. There are minimum staffing requirements of three personnel per apparatus with the exception of the command vehicles. This requires a minimum of 34 persons on duty with a maximum of 43 persons per day.

When fire fighters are not responding to emergency calls they are assigned daily activities involving training, commercial inspections, maintenance of fire apparatus and fire stations and any other services, both internal and external, that may be requested of them.

All members of the Davenport Fire Department are highly committed to providing our customers with the highest level of service, protection and care.
